After 1 week of headaches and feeling poorly, I went to the clinic for a blood pressure check. I registered a concerning 168/94!

In my visit summary, the last blood pressure reading was 168/94, but it had been as high as 175/107 during the check-ups. I was told to start taking Lisinopril 10MG to see if it would help lower my numbers. I asked what would happen if the numbers didn’t go down, and they said they might increase the dose or add another medicine. Since I’ve felt like Western Medicine can sometimes be a bit of a “guessing game,” I asked if there were any natural products or supplements that could help lower my blood pressure. The answer was “NO.”

After purchasing the medication I immediately started researching natural remedies to control blood pressure and found Dr. Berg’s view and advise most logical.

My first surprise was reading about the definition of high BP changing in 2017 from 140/90 to 130/80, so instead of just 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. having high blood pressure (which is about 32 percent), the new guidelines will mean that almost half of all U.S. adults (46 percent) will be considered to have high blood pressure. [1] Include in their data was a link to their funding, which I read from a conflicts of interest perspective. I invite you to read through the 2023 data and come to your own conclusion, but it occurs to me that the 2022-2023 Corporate Funding Received from Pharmaceutical and Biotech Companies and Device Manufacturers was ~$42M.[2]

Next I discovered that blood pressure medications can actually make things worse over time because they take away important nutrients, like potassium [4], which per the Cleveland Clinic, actually helps protect against high blood pressure[6]. Bottom line is you might end up needing more medicine as time goes by and that extended use of these drugs can also hurt your brain, increase your risk of heart attacks, you may develop memory problems, and vision issues. High blood pressure isn’t caused by not having enough of these medicines! [3]

Another surprise natural remedy that my Doctor did not share with me was the benefits of GARLIC. According to WebMD, one study found that taking 300 to 1,500 milligrams of a garlic supplement worked just as well as the medicine atenolol in lowering high blood pressure over 24 weeks. [5] Dr. Mercola has a great one.

In addition to the garlic supplement I wanted to increase my potassium. I found out that taking a potassium supplement would mean I’d have to take a whole bottle every day, so I looked for other options. I found an electrolyte powder from Dr. Berg that gives 21% of the daily recommended amount of potassium and has no sugar.

Update on my BP: Within 1 month of increasing my garlic and potassium intake, I went for my annual physical and my BP was 137/82 and not a concern for my Dr. After another 2 weeks, my at home readings are consistently 120-130/74-84. I use the below unit to check my BP at home.


Quick home blood pressure check

I now check my blood pressure regularly using a home blood pressure monitor. These monitors usually cost between $30 and $100. Check with your insurance as they may help pay for it. I like to check my pressure daily, usually in the AM before leaving for work and once again when I return home. At minimum, check your blood pressure a few times each week, and if you are concerned with the readings, do consult your physician.
